Introduction

ACRIA’s Center on HIV & Aging investigates, defines, and seeks to address the unique needs and challenges that older adults of diverse populations living with HIV face as they age. Through research, education, and advocacy, the Center fosters the open exchange and dissemination of information within the lay and scientific communities and among both older adult and AIDS service providers. This open dialogue serves to advance the formulation of public policy guidelines, the identification of unmet needs, and the articulation of research gaps in this understudied and underserved population.

Effective aging with dignity for those living with HIV is the central mission of ACRIA’s Center on HIV & Aging. ACRIA believes that older adults living with HIV should have access to every form of care and support available to aging members of our society. The Center pursues this goal through a variety of multilingual and culturally competent activities, including behavioral and clinical research; training and technical assistance; community-level interventions; the creation and distribution of population-specific HIV prevention and health literacy materials; the convening of and participation in panels, conferences, and other meetings for experts in the field; media outreach; and information dissemination. Under the direction of an Advisory Council comprised of community and academic leaders in HIV and gerontology from across the U.S. and abroad, the Center represents a unique space where educators, researchers, activists, policy makers, and other stakeholders can come together to address the needs of the fast-growing population of older adults with HIV, ensuring that they are able to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives.
