HIV research has long offered a unique opportunity for underserved populations to gain access to the newest lifesaving treatments and therapies. Through its Clinical Trials Education (CTE) program, ACRIA offers a train-the-trainer-style one-day tutorial in cities and towns across the State. These trainings - for key staff at AIDS organizations, medical research centers, and a host of other community-based organizations serving people living with HIV - expand the knowledge base about clinical trials, the benefits and risks of the trial process, and the barriers to enrollment faced by historically underrepresented HIV-positive populations. The goal is two-fold: to enable staff top address their own perceptions regarding clinical trials while also equipping them to increase their clients’ understanding of and enrollment in clinical trials. In addition, follow-up technical assistance is offered to all participants to help them integrate clinical trials education into their agency’s work and assist their clients in locating, evaluating, and determining whether to participate in appropriate clinical trials.
